Work in progress

The GIStorical Antwerp project aims to function as an integration-framework for (digital) historical data sets. Therefore, to enhance the GIStorical integrational capacity, it is compulsory to expand the Base Map 1834 with new vector-layers both forward in time and backward. Recently, a map dating from 1801 (the so called Façade Plan) has been incorporated in the system. This map can function as a stepping stone to integrate additional spatial data from the Ancien Regime in the future. In addition, the annual changes in the plot boundaries (registered by the Land Registry) between 1835 and 1899 in Antwerp are being processed. When finished a reliable topography situation of every year in this period is reconstructed. A gazetteer is developed to manage the variable system of streets, street names and house numbers.

A couple of historical sources are already integrated in the system:

- The Address Book or Commercial almanacs from the years 1838, 1870 and 1889 were digitized in a project of dr. Ilja van Damme. When mapped they are expected to provide new insights in the changing 19th century Antwerp professional and retail landscape.

- The so-called ‘Count of the Year IV’ is a comprehensive population census from the year 1796. Digitized in a project of prof. dr. Bruno Blondé, GIStorical Antwerp enables this wealth of information to be mapped.
